Scott Braun, an Influential Manager

Scott Braun made the 2009 30 under 30 Billboard list. Chosen from a list of 400 nominees at billboard.biz, the strategy of his success is worthy of taking note. For those who are interested in managing new artist, a true success story is revealed.  Braun success was launched into a level of epic proportions when ““Braun also discovered his first two artists, Asher Roth and Justin Bieber, on MySpace and YouTube, respectively.”[1]

Many who are positioned to work as managers in the entertainment field are wondering just how to get started on this kind of pathway to success. When studying Product and Artist Management at Full Sail University, students are taught the key “ Assets of Influential Product Mangers” through use of a guide. According to the guide, “Product management is the entrepreneurial management of a piece of business (product, product line, service, brand, segment, etc.) as a “virtual” company, with a goal of long-term customer satisfaction and competitive advantage. (Product Manager's Field Guide 6) [2] The entrepreneurship of Braun was displayed as early as 2002, when Braun begin his career by planning parties that led to some very strong connections. Some of those networks remain intact today.

Working to organize live performances attracted the forces of Ludacris, Jermaine Dupri and Usher, among others. The results relationships formed along the path of building his business, support the teachings of Assets of Influential Product Managers. According to the text there are 5 main clusters that highlight the required competencies. They include
1. drive business results
2. deliver results through people
3. ensure market-driven direction
4. guide product “fit” and function
5. manage multiple priorities

 (Product Manager's Field Guide 6) [3].

Having success in all five areas, Braun’s story demonstrates the benefits of developing these competencies. Some of his specific talents include his ability to “broker such deals with Live Nation that produce the first urban and pop stages at the Music Midtown Festival in Atlanta and made Dupri the face of 3 Vodka.”[4]
